My ideas on what the wolves could’ve looked like. Top left: rifleman. Top right: sniper or recon. Bottom left: heavy gunner and bottom right rain and snow variant

Why does Breakpoint's weapon and character customization seem outright inferior to Modern Warfare?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2020 07:53 PM PDT

I picked up the Ultimate Edition of this game heavily discounted two days ago. Been playing it for about 4 or 5 hours and whilst there are some elements I like, I'm genuinely shocked by how shallow the character creation and especially the weapon customization is. Especially when it feels worse compared to Wildland's system. I have over 20 days played in MW and every gun leveled up to max with all attachments unlocked.

I remember picking up a SCAR 17 excited to play around with its attachments only to see that it has two barrels (standard and a generically named 'short barrel'). MW's SCAR-17 has 3 barrels on top of the standard configuration, all with far more accurate names. Only one generic suppressor compared to MW's 3 suppressors with uniquely different stats and appearance. Customization, authenticity, and realism are supposed to be this series' selling points, and yet it's getting outdone in this area by Call of Duty? An arcadey twitch shooter?

While you can customize individual clothing and armor pieces, the choices are actually quite limited, and there seems to be little authentic uniforms available. MW seems to be beating out this game in this regard to, with the release of outfits from real-world units like Serbian CAJ, Russian FSB, and USMC MEF. I saw more goofy title crossover pieces than anything else.

Generally speaking, if I can't utilize deep customization for my gun and character, then what is the point? Breakpoint doesn't really do much else better than other games to make me want to play it. It's gunplay isn't really amazing, it's open world is sort of lifeless and stamped out like most Ubisoft games, and the story is by no means riveting or engaging.

    Breakpoint impressions after 100hrs

    Posted: 02 Jul 2020 01:25 PM PDT

This is largely adressed at ubisoft, in the vague hope that I'm echoing the same sentiments that countless others have expressed and that they stick with Breakpoint long enough to make it the game it ought to be.

So, I recently picked up Breakpoint, after they added immersive mode and it was on sale for 15 euros.

I've been playing it quite alot as I do like the general idea of the game but it's... well... it's a mess.

Auroa is beautiful and there's alot to like in many ways. But then I think about wildlands and breakpoint just looks like a cacophony of missed chances. In no particular order, non-exhaustive and off the top of my head.

    1. Why do a whole a bunch of guns not have single shot options? Anything that doesn't have single shot is useless.
    2. No holstering your weapon? Who on earth thought that would be a good idea? On that note, what's with the completely weird civilian reactions to gun toting commando's? You know what people do if there's a gunfight nearby? Mostly they just run away. Very healthy human behaviour. In any event they don't cower and wimper in the middle of the fray and then insult the people firing weapons around them.
    3. Stuff like magazine pouches. Just get them right for god's sake. You design a model of a mag, also design at least one type of mag pouch for it and make it work with whatever gear you're wearing. In a first iteration the Assault Rifle, MG, Sniper, SMG vest sets were fine. Breakpoint is the next game, and it needs to improve, so we don't want AR mags on the vest when you're toting an AK. It' immersion killing. If you're really lazy, I suppose just going with a number of generic options would be possible, but let's be honest the added work of making mag pouches when a weapon is being 3D designed anyway isn't shocking and it will be usable not only across multiple tiles (The Division, Far Cry spring to mind), but probably even across multiple generations of games.
    4. Appearances. Seriously? The narrative continues from Wildlands but you couldn't be bothered to port and improve the tiny handful of appearances that were available in Wildlands so that we can remake the same Nomad?
    5. I thought the intention was to make money with this game? There are practically zero cosmetics available in the store? You can't get your customers to spend more if they have nothing to spend on.
    6. A different barrel shroud does not a gun make. Scout, Assault etc versions of guns are nonsense as seperate guns and a poor, lazy effort. Give us more real world guns instead of things like a G36C Scout, which is stupid as the C is the designation for a shortened version. If you unshorten it, it isn't a C anymore.
    7. Map seems rushed. There are so many places where I find floating pieces of scenery. Wildlands seemed to have had better quality control.
    8. Missing the teammates, but that's coming.
    9. Base jumping still really doesn't work very well. It base jumps you when you want to go down a ladder, or doesn't base jump you at all when you fall from great height. Annoying.
    10. What's with the endless animations getting into and out of bivouacs. Was nice the first time, gotten to extremely annoying now.
    11. What's with the wonky ammo system? Respawn with half ammo, switch weapon get half ammo have to go in and out of the bivouac with the endless annoying animations to top off ammo. It's a useless pain.
    12. Drone enemies. Sigh. They are boring. Just do tanks, attack helicopters, that sort of thing. Classic stuff that's hard to kill in an environment that ought to have a shortage of heavy weapons. Far more interesting and immersive.
    13. More configurability. I want difficult enemies, but I hate bullet sponges. I now have no means of choosing that combination. Simple matter of several sliders controlling things like how perceptive, hit resistant, fast, tactical the enemy is.
    14. Why can't enemy soldiers climb ladders? You can spend all day on any roof and all the bad guys do is mill around the building waiting for you to pick them off.
    15. Still no retractable gear on choppers. I can hardly think of a better example of the laziness that is present in this game, and was already there in Wildlands.

As far as I can tell, this game has a core audience that is just a slightly more casual version of the Arma crowd. That means you need to get your guns, accessories and kit sorted properly and you need alot of it. I imagine most of the unpractical fantasy garbage isn't interesting to anyone. Start with a decent selection of real world equivalent gear and if you absolutely must then you can make some extraneous fantasy nonsense.

In all, even with the improvements, breakpoint is still a poor effort. It's better that alot of other things that are out there, but its still a tragedy of missed chances and poor design decisions. Imagine how great it could have been if it'd been done right.

Comparison between the normal wolf and then the tactical wolf, I personally feel that the right makes the wolves feel more human and not sci fi like

Playing Breakpoint with the voice of Sam Fisher! This took me 12 hours to edit and render. It's not perfect but I think this series comes out pretty cool!

Let's start a chain of our favorite curses from Nomad

    Posted: 02 Jul 2020 02:45 PM PDT

I'll start. My favorite is when Nomad is intimidating a lieutenant by calling him a "fuckstick". I just don't know how the guy can't burst out laughing from such a schoolyard insult.

Breakpoint has Many Issues but I Applaud Ubisoft in Fixing the game and the Fun Factor is so High for this Title!
