Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint: Developer Update – June 5, 2020

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 09:08 AM PDT

    Ghosts,

In the Developer Update we published late April 2020, we shared that we were aiming for a release date of June 2020 for our next update, TU 2.0.5.

After careful consideration and due to the circumstances of our developers working from home, we are choosing to incorporate this patch into a larger title update, TU 2.1.0, which will arrive mid-July.

TU 2.1.0 will contain a lot of updates that we hope are worth the wait, including:

    • The release of the AI teammates
    • Bug Fixing + Quality of Life updates
    • Our next Gunsmith update
    • PvP Update
    • All planned fixes from TU 2.0.5, including a fix for the current reproduction steps of the DMR exploit
    • And more!

We're excited to incorporate these major changes into the game, and we appreciate your patience and understanding while we work to provide the best experience possible within Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint.

Once they add A.I teammates, make it so we can do a raid with them rather than other people.

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 04:17 AM PDT

I understand this mechanically will be very difficult as raids are usually the toughest part of games and not all are fans of raids with exclusive gear being behind them (tactical vertical grip, ahem cough). BUT, if they worked it, where the difficulty was there for those who like the challenge, but being able to go through in your own style at your own pace and adjusting the raid when doing it with ai teammates so it's achievable would be a win win there.

Visible IR lasers from our teammates

A small feature in Wildlands that made playing at night even more fun and being able to see where others were aiming was useful, though this feature is missing in Breakpoint unfortunately. Definitely something I'm gonna suggest on the next survey, provided they have another one.

What do you think are the AI mates capable of? Will they be able to raid with you? (yeah, I know how naive it is just to think about that)

Are they gonna be like in WL, just following you and join the action with little commands (I actually never used)

Is there anything Ubi stated anything about this in detail?

    Banter About Ghost Recon Breakpoint

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 07:43 PM PDT

To preface, this will be a mixture of my own opinions, things I think we all can agree upon, and facts. If its the facts that you disagree with, you're daft, but otherwise feel free to yell at me or hold a civil discussion with me and your fellow GR players in the comments. There will also be a lot of comparison to Wildlands as Breakpoint is a continuation of Wildlands' style and is thus the obvious comparison. Since this post got long fast, I have retrospectively given each section it's own TLDR in (bold-italics parenthesis) tacked onto the end of the section and there will be an overall summary at the end. Enjoy!

First and foremost, I think we can all agree that Breakpoint is a step-up in game mechanics, features, content, etc. from Wildlands. I far prefer the gunplay and shooting in Breakpoint as it feels much more fluid and less sluggish than Wildlands, and the movement system is a definite improvement even if its not perfect. Driving also feels a little better, though I enjoy the weightier feel of cars in Wildlands more. Helicopters still are a huge weakpoint for this game, just like they were in Wildlands, but by this point its clear Ubisoft's goals with the helicopters are as transportation 90% of the time, so I don't expect improvement there in the future. Stealth mechanics and whatnot feels improved from Wildlands, though this might be a hard thing to prove 100%, so don't quote me on that. The injury system is a welcome addition, and the class system is good fun too, letting players specialise how they play the game to a good effect. However, this game has a lot fewer guns than Wildlands, so don't expect to be spoiled for choice (TLDR: Game mechanics and features are a step up from Wildlands, with additions and improvements all around the board, except heli's. Far fewer guns in this game)

The gun editor is hit or miss; having a RPM instead of a bar gauge for fire rate is nice and the paint editor is easier to use, but I feel like there are fewer things you can change on your weapons (I haven't noticed a single weapon that has a longer barrel option nor is there an AFG grip). Furthermore, there's no real reasoning behind the different things you can put onto different guns. The Silver Stake and Silver Stake Tactical have totally different customisation options (one can equip the MAWL while the other cannot) and the game actively discourages players who like a balanced-performing gun from using heavily modded guns at all; an extended mag for an ASR adds a massive 15% vertical recoil and the RVG and Lightweight vertical foregrips have massive 15% horizontal recoil penalties as well, for no good reason, all of which makes gun customisation frustrating at times. (TLDR: You'll probably like Wildlands' gun customisation a little more if you're a gun nut as this system is a little less fleshed out, but painting is a little easier in this game)

The character and clothing editor is also hit or miss. Because of Ubisofts insistence on making Breakpoint a Division game under the Ghost Recon name, clothing options are fairly limited at the start of your playthrough, with a lot of things not even being obtainable if you play with gear leveling turned off (I still dont have the Combat boots and a couple of hats after 60+ hours). Being able to wear NVGs of your choice without having a super hard-to-get helmet is an obvious plus, but beyond that, the character editor really feels like a downgrade from Wildlands; 5 outfit presets compared to 6 and far, far fewer camo/colour options, ghillie suits arent even a thing, and the aforementioned lack of options from the start.(TLDR: Character customisation is more or less a step down, with only a couple exceptions. If you liked it in Wildlands, you'll like it in Breakpoint, but you'll have less clothing options overall and no ghillies)

Now, onto a big point for me and probably a lot of people: the map. The map of Breakpoint is, to be blunt, disappointing. While it may make more sense in its overall composition, it is far less diverse and interesting and most importantly, its quite a lot smaller. Wildlands map containted more biomes than I could count on my hands, while Breakpoint just doesnt. Wildlands had salt flats and lakelands, deserts and mesas, highlands and marshes, you get the idea, it had everything. On the other hand, Breakpoint's map, while a LOT of fun, just doesn't have the same wow factor that made Wildlands' already big map feel even bigger. Now, as if the map wasn't already a weakpoint, Breakpoint suffers from dreadfully repetitive locations. I get it's a theme within the lore of the island, but it's also fucking lazy. After a while, you will recognise the same buildings over and over and over again, and it gets old very fast. You really get the feeling that all expenses were spared during the creation of the building assets for this game. You also get the feeling that a lot of time was NOT spent quality checking the map. Like, none at all. You'll find floating assets like folders and laptops all over the place, and they're not physics objects so they weren't just randomly spawned there; they were assets that once had a surface to rest upon that weren't removed when said surface was removed. Also, probably the biggest embarrassment I've found is that you can get under the map at the Liberty Detention Centre. Yeah, this particular location was so lazily done that you can shimmy between the rocks and under the pathway leading to the main building from the helipad. It's really bad. (TLDR: Map is far less diverse than Wildlands' and quite a bit smaller. Less impressive looking map, locations are pretty repetitive in their structure and architechture, but the environments are still very well made and very immersive. Quality control is piss poor)

Onto something a little more positive for Breakpoint, its techincal side. Breakpoint is an underrated great technical achievement. The game looks absolutely stunning, with particular Wow! with its lighting and reflections, which looks to me to be raytraced, or at least some similar method. Shading looks great too, and vegetation also stuns, though water looks less watery than it did in Wildlands. The game also runs pretty well on machines with limited processing and graphical power, and doesn't look like dog dookey when turned down to lower settings to run on those machines. The game cuts many corners when it comes to rendering methods and render distance, with enemies disappearing before they're even 600m away (that being said, the game tells me I have a 696m kill which I don't remember, so I dont know what to say about that), and pop-in is absolutely horrendous. Also, while the cutscenes themselves look pretty good, the facial animation is good only sometimes. A lot of the cutscenes use facial animation that I can only assume is AI-made, algorithm-based for the speaking. It looks shitty and outdated, and is very, very lazy. Want proof? Go talk to Holt in Erewhon. That's not how human faces look when we talk. Also, because its an Ubisoft title. Expect bugs. A lot of bugs. (TLDR: The game looks very good, and runs pretty well on lesser machinery. Game suffers from cut corners concerning render distance and pop-in, facial animations are totally hit or miss, and the game is very very buggy)

Okay, onto one of the harder parts of the game to dissect; gameplay. I'm going to start off with my main gripe with the game; I don't like the drones. At all. When I play a shooter, I want to shoot humans (or at least humanoids) 9/10 times. And on that 1/10 time I want to shoot something else, it's NEVER drones. I don't want to have to dump and entire magazine into an enemy that isn't even a miniboss (something that also doesn't belong in this game) or have to spot this teeny tiny drone that often flies directly overhead. And don't get me started on the drones that spawn with the Wolf patrols. Talk about a big middle finger to any player that isn't a professional gamer or someone who uses a shotgun (I'm neither). Now that drones are out of the way, I can confidently say that Breakpoint is one of the most fun shooters I've ever played, and definitely the most fun in it's particular category, which I would call tactical non-sim shooter. Stealthing and tactical planning is fun, really fun, and open gunfights are just as engaging. Throw up your drone, get an overview of your target area, and chose your own way to achieve your goal. Wildlands did this open-ended, open world tactical shooter formula really well, and Breakpoint does it better with refined mechanics and added functionality. You can move in, take out every target in a compound, with or without being seen, complete your objective, and move out, leaving with a sense of efficiency and tactical achievement that games like COD just don't give you. However, if you liked Sync Shot in Wildlands, prepare to be disappointed. Sync Shot is now a consumable dependent system; if you dont have any Sync Shot drones, you can't use Sync Shot. I used it a tonne in Wildlands but literally haven't used it once in Breakpoint. The game is easy. Very easy. If you're even remotely good at shooters, you'll have to turn most of the game's difficulty settings all the way up to even start to get a challenge. This is all assuming you have gear leveling turned off, which you should if you bought this game assuming you were getting a shooter and not an RPG. (TLDR: This game does open-ended, open world tactical shooting very well just like Wildlands, and with the new class system, you really can play the game however you want. Stealth is fun and engaging, and open firefights are too. Sync Shot has been defiled. If you liked Wildlands, this game plays similarly. If you didn't like how Wildlands played, this game isn't for you)

Oh yeah, its that part of this "review" now. The gear leveling system. !OPINION ALERT! In and of itself, gear leveling isn't a bad thing; games like Destiny and the Division use it to great success. However, it has no place in a tactical, conventional shooter such as Breakpoint. With it on, enemies become bullet sponges (sometimes taking 6+ bullets to kill when unalerted) and the game assigns, from what I can tell, totally arbitrary numbers to your gear and weapons that don't affect their individual performance levels but instead average out to a player level that is compared to enemy levels and calculates damage dealt and taken based on that comparison. Confused? Yeah, it's confusing. A 416 at level 20 does the same damage and has the same stats as a 416 at level 220, as far as I can tell. Give 10 people each an SG556, randomly picked from a stash of 100 SG556's and they will all shoot the same, and if those people start shooting each other, they will quickly find out that they all hurt the same as well. That's how guns work. Not only was this system very poorly integrated and explained in this game, it also has no place in it and only serves to draw all of Ubisofts titles into some weird "hey we are all the same game at the core" orgy. "Gear Leveling Off" is the proper way to play this game. With a 416, two non-headshot shots to kill an unaware enemy, 5-6 to kill an alerted enemy. Realistic(ish), fun, and playable. Okay, r/rant over, I promise (TLDR: I don't like the gear leveling at all. Enemies become bullet spongy, the game isn't designed to be an RPG and it shows. If you want gear leveling, Destiny and the Division do it better because it was part of their design. Turn off gear leveling in Breakpoint for a consistent, fun, semi-realistic experience without the need to grind for new guns when you already have the guns you want)

Now for the plot. (SPOILERS ARE COVERED, REVEAL AT YOUR OWN RISK) Put plainly, Ghost Recon Breakpoint's plot is not a strong one. It's neither believable nor compelling. The plot fully relies on a bunch of super high tech stuff but also takes place in 2025, the NOT DISTANT FUTURE. The plot also has a lot of plotholes that are (mostly) shut with the lazy as hell "oh this tiny privateer island has some superweapon that can bring the most powerful countries in the world to their knees". But at the same time this islands autocracy can't even squash an underfunded, under-equipped rebellion on its own island. The plot also relies heavily on you, the player, not questioning a lot questionable plot developments and explanations. (TLDR: Plot is pretty crappy, and the story-arc is lazy)

Okay, time for some of the smaller bits and bobs separated by dashes (this section will not have a TLDR as its a collection of small, unrelated things).

---Deer in this game make elk noises. Yeah, I noticed, game dev Dave. Fix your shit.

---Where the hell is the Tier system from Wildlands? Once you hit level 30 in Breakpoint, you dont level up anymore, at all. And its not like it takes forever to hit level 30, I did it in under 30 hours, so past that any feeling of character progression is limited to class ranks.

    ---Lots of microtransactions. LOTS

---If you can find a Co-Op buddy, do that. It makes this game a lot more fun having a tactical buddy. Live together, fuck up together, die together.

---Ghost War is still not for most people. Maps are tiny, games are very short, and there's nothing tactical about it except by chance. Honestly the PvP experience is so far removed from what you get in PvE that you'd be forgiven for thinking it was from a different game. But hey, at least you can use your own character and gear in Ghost War in Breakpoint...

---Why is the M26 the in-game grenade? The M67 has largely replaced it...

So in summary, if you are so lazy you wont even ready the TLDRs provided throughout this "review", Ghost Recon Breakpoint is a good game. It's open world, open-ended formula lets you really wear the shoes of a special operator by having to plan your own tactics in your operations. If you fuck up, you can learn what not to do next time. Or you can shoot your way out of it and not learn at all. Gun and Character Customisation is more or less the same as Wildlands, if not watered down a little bit. Plot is shit, so don't get too worked up over it. The game looks really good, but is buggy and suffers from the typical graphical shortcuts. Gear leveling is stupid and should be turned off. Map is okay, definitely a step down from Wildlands, in terms of size, diversity, and quality, though still interesting within its own merit.

If you took the time to read this entire write-up, you're mad. And if you read the entire thing and didn't upvote, I'll see you in hell

    Hello!

Is there a work-around or hotfix planned for this achievement/trophy?

I've recently tried both fast-traveling and flown to each of the 8 'Mysterious Carillons', and standing close to them for a few minutes without the achievement unlocking for me.

I'm playing a EU digital version of the game on a PS4 PRO.

Epic Games Sale + 10.00 off

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 06:54 PM PDT

With the sale going on now for PC on epic games, I'm wondering if its time to pull the trigger on BP. I think I'm going to purchase it but I'm not sure whether I should get the Gold or Ultimate. Any thoughts are appreciated.

The Ultimate is on sale for 39.59 - the 10.00 coupon they gave out so for 30.00 I'm thinking it might be worth it now. The gold is 32.99 - the 10.00 coupon so for 23.00 for the gold or 30.00 for the ultimate this is a pretty good sale. Which edition would you guys recommend?

More than the money though as 7.00ish isn't a big deal, I'm wondering if this a decent game to find a community to play with? I'm migrating from Xbox games back to PC and just don't know anyone on PC any more.

    Thanks much!
