Opinion: Wildlands Vs. Breakpoint In 2021

    Posted: 04 May 2021 01:21 PM PDT

    ⚠️ Warning: Long Post!

    • Introduction: After 579 hours in Wildlands and 455 hours in Breakpoint I decided to write down my opinion on what each game did better. After playing on a Closed Alpha and on the Public Beta of Breakpoint I was disappointed with many of the decisions Ubisoft made and I wrote a post back then detailing all the things that Wildlands did better. After a year from the release of Breakpoint I'm happy to say that many things have been improved and some really nice features, that Wildlands didn't have, have been added. Of course, some things like the story and others cannot be fixed. So, here is my personal opinion on what each game did better and a suggestion that would take no effort for the developers but it would make Breakpoint a bit better. Again, everything below is just my opinion based on my experience on both games.

    • Wildland Pros:

    1. A better and bigger story (The missions were not stretched out like in Breakpoint where you have lots of times to travel from one side to the map to the other to speak to an NPC just to go back to talk again to the NPC who sent you and then travel again to collect intel in the other side of the map again. Also, the Ghosts had actually a plan to follow, destroy the cartels production, security etc. In order to destabilize the cartel unlike Breakpoint. The missions were also more interesting and diverse. In one mission you were exposing the the kid trafficking ring of their Pope and then you had to snatch him before his own people kill him, next mission you were destroying coca fields, planting one jefe's slugs to another jefe's base to create inside fighting, raiding a jefe's house just to find his wife, extracting her, offering her protection and then with her help snatching the Jefe, going for a deal with Madre Coca but it turns out it was an ambush so you and your rebels have to fight your way out, freeing the imprisoned family of one cocalero who decided to work with you after extracting him without alerting the sicarios who basically held him captured in his own house etc.).
    2. Better replayability (The fact that you have to go through a loading screen just to replay a mission in Breakpoint is stupid).
    3. Better and more diverse customization (The game had a lot more gear that was unlocked from the get go instead of being on the store for real money).
    4. Better gunsmith (After so many gunsmith updates in Breakpoint and we still can't use all red dot sights like the Micro T on our guns).
    5. More Diverse and alive map (Bolivia felt alive with civilians going about their day, driving, dancing etc.).
    6. More realistic enemies: (Not only did we have Unidad which spiced up the gameplay and made it so if you get in fight with them that you have to fight yourself out since they will continue coming for you, but the enemies were more realistic. The cod juggernaut rip off and the Usain Bolt fast shotgun enemies have no place in a Ghost Recon game. Also, the A.I were more alive, they were not constantly standing around. They would sit to eat, listen to music, sing, play football, exercise etc.).
    7. No always online (Which means you can play Wildlands forever and not until Ubisoft decides to shut down the servers and you can play even when services like PSN are down).
    8. Better Bases (There are very few real bases in Breakpoint, most of them are just generic looking houses and buildings that have sentinels around).
    9. No Drone Enemies (Fighting drones feels awful. They move around like they are on drugs, they have infinite amount of ammo that have no place to store, they destroy stealth gameplay since they can not only spot you from greater distances but also spot dead bodies. Also, land drones are bullet sponges which in my opinion would be ok for The Division but not for GR).
    10. Ghost's Drones options (Somehow in Breakpoint Ghosts lost all their special drones even though they are stuck on an island that that does one thing: Manufacture Drones! The EMP, explosive drones etc. were really nice additions and made sense to be on the hands of ghosts who like to have experimental high-tech gadgets.
    11. No Automatic Turrets and Mortars (The mortars in Wildlands made sense. Somebody had to use them, if you killed that somebody then they can't use them. Just like drones, the only thing automatic turrets and mortars are good at is being annoying, they have again infinite ammo that they have nowhere to store and they don't mind shooting at you even if that means that they are going to kill their own sentinel that stand in their line of sight or are in the area of their mortar strike. To be fair Mortars in Wildlands were reckless too but at least you could kill their operators without having to blow up the mortars themselves to make them stop shooting at you).
    12. The rebels were a great mechanic (They made the gameplay more dynamic by having all these big fights against the 4 factions: Ghosts, Santa Blanca, Rebels, Unidad. Also, they even the playing field. If the fight got loud, you could call them in to reinforce and distract the enemies which made the gameplay more complex, you had more options).
    13. Friendly A.I (They had a lot more dialogue and were somewhat fleshed out characters unlike Breakpoint where they were not even in the game at launch and now that they are, all they do is comment on your kills or on enemies escaping).
    14. More suited Vehicles for the Ghosts (Where is the Blackhawk Ubisoft?).

      1. Ghost mode. (Even though you could die from some bugs, Ghost mode made everything so much more intense. Playing in ghost mode and having Unidad chasing you down, that's what gave you the feeling of being not the hunter but the hunted not the 3 random Wolves patrolling Auroa).

    • Breakpoint Pros:

    1. The movement and animations look and feel better (More down to earth and realistic, they have more weight. The Ghosts use cover to their advantage).
    2. Guns (They sound better and control better especially the semi auto ones. Also, with the "Ballistic Advantage" perk the Bullet Drop becomes much better and more realistic).
    3. U.I and Difficulty/Survival options (Even though they came after the game released, being able to choose is a wonderful feature that I hope will become a staple of GR games in the future. Being able to choose exactly which elements of HUD you want on and which off and choosing between the several survival features that make the game more or less realistic and challenging based on what you choose is amazing and it lets everyone play the way they want).
    4. Enemies (Even though they lack in a lot of things, as I analyzed in the Wildlands section, at least they don't know your exact location as soon as they find a body).

    • Breakpoint Fixed/Changed/Gave the option to:

    1. Reduce and almost remove the Drones (As I analyzed in the Wildlands section, I find drones really frustrating to deal with so the option to almost remove them is more than welcome. Personally, I would go a step forward and allow players to completely remove them which of course would make some factions missions unavailable).
    2. Remove Loot and Leveled Gear (Being able to completely turn off loot by playing in the Immersive mode is incredible).
    3. Turn off online players in the Social Hub (You are no longer forced to have random players walking around and completely tanking your FPS in consoles).
    4. A.I. Teammates are back. (Ever since Ubisoft announced that there won't be A.I. teammates people asked for them and Ubisoft promised to bring them back and they delivered. Now we can not only customize their appearance but also their guns which is awesome. Also, there's a new update in June that will hopefully make the even better!).
    5. Improved Animations (Even though the animations in my opinion were better than Wildlands, before all the updates they were kind of junky, too slow and there was a big delay when doing things like: Entering and exiting cars, climbing ladders etc. All these things have been fixed).
    6. The ability to cut through Fences has been added. (Really cool feature that lots of people were asking for).

    • A suggestion that would make the game better and would take no extra effort from the developers:

    1. Let us use all Sights, Red Dots and grips on all guns that have the needed rail space. You have already created them and put them in the game so let us use them on all our guns.

    • Conclusion: So, after analyzing both games I believe Wildlands is the better game because it got some very important things namely the story, mission replayability and offline play right BUT Breakpoint added some really nice features and improved some old ones which I hope they keep for the next GR games to come.

    • PS: I love both games that's why I spent the time to write all this and I really hope that the next GR will be what all the GR fans want it to be.

Edit: Added Ghost mode In Wildlands Pros.
